MISTAKES TO AVOID WHILE PREPARING FOR IELTS EXAM

IELTS EXAM encompasses tasks based on the linguistic skills of English such as Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening. These skills segregated with various tasks with a time limit. Many times it is observed that candidates study hard for the IELTS EXAM yet they are not able to score high due to some mistakes they consign. Some of the common mistakes that they do can be highlighted so that when you appear in IELTS EXAM you can avoid them to score high band and enhance the chances to relocate to your choicest English Speaking country.

1. Preparation is not planned with the latest exam pattern and syllabus. It makes the efforts futile and worthless therefore it is very important to know the syllabus and types of questions asked in the exam to make the preparation effective and result-oriented.

2. Candidates not working hard to improve their time management skills. Monitoring time while attempting mock tests is essential or else you are not able to complete the tasks given in time as all the tasks are timed.

3. Ignoring instructions given in the exam also gives a bad score therefore read the instructions carefully to avoid any technical mistake. You should read the instructions and be aware of all the item types before attempting the exam. Do not waste time reading instructions during the exam.

4. Doing grammatical and spelling mistakes in writing tasks diminish the chances of scoring high.

5. In the speaking task, do not speak before the microphone opens. Do use this time in preparing your answer.

6. While answering, do not pause for more than 3 seconds because the microphone will automatically switch off if you stop speaking.

7. The students should not hesitate to speak or go back to correct themselves if they commit an error as replacements, omissions, and insertions as it will affect their score.

8. While speaking, the students should not try to copy any foreign accent but concentrate on oral fluency, pronunciation, and intonation.

9. There should be no hurry in finishing your answer. It’s important to maintain a normal pace of speech which should be audible and clear.

10. Do maintain continuity in your answer and avoid using too many types of filler like “uhhh”, “ummm” etc.

11. While completing an answer, students should wait until the Status box shows “completed”. The answer will not get recorded if you click on the next option before the status shows “completed”.

12. While writing a response, the students should properly check spellings, grammar, and punctuation errors. There should be unity of ideas in presenting your response.

13. In a given task, all the questions as well as sub-questions should be properly addressed and answered.

14. While writing a response, vocabulary and linguistic range plays a very important role because vocabulary skills help in developing comprehension skills and these skills help in evolving the ability to understand sentences easily.
